About 5.11 Apparel

5.11's apparel range traces back to a single garment. In 1968, mountaineer Royal Robbins designed a climbing trouser rated 5.11 on the Yosemite Decimal System, the hardest grade on the scale. The pant was later adopted as the FBI Academy's training uniform, and became the foundation of what 5.11 Tactical builds today.

The apparel line has expanded well beyond that original pant. Duty and tactical trousers, technical shirting, outer layers, belts, gloves and headwear, all engineered for law enforcement, military, EMS and the professionals who wear the same gear off-duty. Fabric choice, reinforcement placement and pocket layout are worked out in the field before they go into production.
